403 DOCTORS’ POSTS LYING VACANT IN KBK DISTRICTS

Bhubaneswar:
Members cutting across party lines in the State Assembly on Friday expressed their concern over the poor state of health services and acute shortage of doctors in the KBK districts.

Responding to a question asked by Congress member Santosh Singh Saluja, Health Minister Damodar Rout admitted that doctors are reluctant to serve in the KBK districts despite incentives offered to them by the Government. Even, doctors who are natives of the KBK region are not keen to serve in the area and, instead, want postings in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, he said.

Revealing that 403 doctors’ posts are lying vacant in the KBK districts, Dr Rout said the situation would improve with the opening of new medical colleges in the State. Stern actions like dismissal and notices in newspapers have been planned against the doctors remaining on leave for infinite periods on some pretext or the other after being posted to the KBK areas, he said.

He said as many as 65 new medical colleges would come up in the country with Central assistance during the 12th Plan period and Odisha has proposed to set up four new medical colleges, one each in Baleswar, Baripada, Koraput and Balangir districts.
